AirSleuth is a PC-based, spectrum analyzer that operates in the 2.4 GHz range of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. It can be used to monitor wireless devices and RF interference that impact the performance, range and security of wireless networks. We have found the data it provides most useful during installation and trouble-shooting of 802.11b/g wireless networks. When AirSleuth is installed on a laptop computer it provides mobile, site survey information that facilitates optimal configuration of wireless networks and proper location of RF devices, and aids in identifying potential sources of interference. In addition to displaying results in real-time, AirSleuth includes a logging functionality that allows data to be recorded and later played-back for analysis. Also, AirSleuth can print snapshots of data traces from the screen.
AirSleuth offers 10 real-time diagnostic views of the RF data it captures (see our Screenshots page) -- including Traces, Differential Traces, Differential Channels, Selected Channels, Pie Chart, Spectrogram, Sorted Channels, Channel Timecourse, Channel Spectrogram, and Timecourse. AirSleuth also includes a real-time calculation of “Best WiFi Channel” – i.e. the channel with the least interference. Employing multiple views of the data allows the user to gain a better understanding of the local, RF landscape in which their wireless network is operating. Armed with this knowledge the user can make better decisions setting-up, configuring and maintaining their wireless network so that it operates at optimal bandwidth. Also, if a wireless network is performing poorly then AirSleuth can aid in determining whether other wireless devices operating in the vicinity are the source of RF interference.
AirSleuth-Pro is available with either a PCMCIA or USB wireless device -- your choice. The PCMCIA version comes with an external 5 dBi antenna that attaches to the PC Card's MMCX connector.
AirSleuth May Be Used For
When the AirSleuth application is running the device
operates in a passive mode and behaves as a receiver. AirSleuth
repeatedly scans the 2.4 GHz range to determine the signal strength
of 79 Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) channels and displays
the results in a variety of different views. The technique of
scanning the spectrum does not introduce additional RF signals and
will not interfere with other wireless devices.
A demo version of AirSleuth is also available -- DemoSleuth is a software-only application that simulates all the functionality of AirSleuth. It is distributed without cost and may also be downloaded here.
Included in the AirSleuth package is a wireless device -- either PCMCIA or USB, the AirSleuth application and installation programs on CD, and instructions. Also, the latest version of the program can be downloaded from our Products page. Compared to more expensive analyzers that cost several thousands of dollars, AirSleuth is modestly priced and costs $395.00 USD (plus shipping/handling).
